Spencer McMullenMakes His Markon the Chuck 70
April 23, 2020
@spencermcmullen
In 2015, a kid flipped over the handlebars of his bike trying to show Tyler, The Creator an illustration before his concert. Tyler stopped, helped him off the ground and reviewed his entire sketchbook. That kid was Spencer McMullen, and that once-in-a-lifetime interaction happened in his hometownof Jacksonville, FL.
Fast forward five years and Spencer is handpicked by Tyler, The Creator to design an Artist Series Chuck 70featuring his artwork.
Spencer on his approach:
"I wanted to approach this shoe in the most straightforward, compound way; my artwork caked on top of the classic OG white (Chuck) 70, with no colors changed. Over a couple months, I worked on new drawings and paintings to feature on the shoe. I kept the blank original shoe on my desk to look at every day."
Illustrating from his home studio, Spencer brings the iconic Chuck 70 canvas to life with hand-drawn characters he’s encountered near and far.
Spencer on his art:
"The paintings I make currently are kinda like coloring books because I map everything out first, so it's easy to sense when they're done."
The split-side design is detailed with a dancing boy and dog, a snapshot from a barber shop, a bust eye and greetings from Sweden, these sneakers tell a story.
Spencer on the collaboration:
"Converse was such a big part of my childhood. Naturally, I grew up wearing them and I drew on every pair, my mom kept my first pair from age 5-6 and even those are all marked up. Applying my artwork to this sneaker was really a dream come true."
